Sandbox RPG Hytale has confirmed that it’s still targeting a console release, but we may have to wait quite a while before it makes its debut on PlayStation and Xbox. In development since 2015, Hytale is one of the most anticipated indie game releases of the decade, blending Minecraft-style aesthetics and building/crafting systems with deeper systems of RPG combat, exploration, and storytelling.
Hytale launched in early access earlier this week on January 13, but for the time being, it’s only available for PC. In an extensive FAQ posted on Hytale’s website, executive director Patrick “Lyall” Derbic says a console version is still coming, “but this requires a lot of work on backend systems, so it’s not something we want to invest resources into right now. For now, we would like to focus on making a good game first.”
Hytale Is Coming To PlayStation And Xbox
But We Don’t Know Exactly When
Hytale is a full-game spinoff from the modded Hypixel Minecraft server. However, it’s anything but a Minecraft clone; it incorporates several original mechanics, and is designed to play more as an RPG with building mechanics and a procedurally generated world than a full-on sandbox game.
After ten years in development, including a cancellation and subsequent revival in 2025, Hytale is finally playable in early access. However, there are many features missing from the early access version, which Derbic says will be added to the game throughout its early access period.
For now, that appears to be developer Hypixel’s top priority: ensuring Hytale is feature-complete, incorporating all the mechanics they wanted to include without any major bugs. That’s the goal of the early access period, but, until that’s achieved, it’s unlikely we’ll see any movement on the console port front.
Derbic’s recent FAQ post confirms that Hypixel is still interested in an eventual console release, so Hytale is, for all intents and purposes, still coming to PS5 and Xbox. Just when, though, we can’t say with any degree of certainty.
We’re In For A Bit Of A Wait, Though
Hytale Could Be In Early Access For Years
It could be quite a while before Hypixel gets to work on the console versions, let alone releases them. Even once Hytale is feature-complete, it’ll take quite a while to get the game ready to run on consoles, so a port could still be years away.
