The last five years or so have seen the erosion of long-standing exclusivity strategies, including numerous first-party PlayStation titles coming to PC, and Xbox abandoning exclusives almost entirely. Nintendo remains stalwart in closely guarding the availability of its franchises, but the relative openness surrounding first-party titles from Sony and Microsoft has been a notable net positive for consumers this console generation. Things may be about to change, though, and it could all be Xbox’s fault.
PlayStation’s strategy of belated PC ports started with Horizon Zero Dawn in 2020, and has seen many of its biggest games release on Steam, including the God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and The Last of Us franchises—though we’re still waiting for a potential Ghost of Yotei PC port. It gives Sony a chance to double-dip with the ever-growing PC gaming market, and those with no interest in owning a PS5 can still play a selection of first-party titles. A major change in Xbox hardware strategy may be causing Sony to rethink its approach.
It Sounds Like PlayStation Exclusives Won’t Be Coming To PC Anymore
Reputable gaming journalist Jason Schreier recently mentioned on an episode of his Triple Click podcast that PlayStation appears to be rethinking its PC port strategy regarding single-player games specifically (ResetEra user Smitch has a convenient transcript of the relavent bits).
