FRISCO, Texas — Arkansas State’s 34-28 win over Missouri State in the first-ever Xbox Bowl on Thursday night secured a winning record for a program that engineered one of the more dramatic turnarounds in FBS football this season.
The Red Wolves opened with a 1-4 record, with their only win during that stretch coming against Southeast Missouri State of the FCS at home in the season opener on Aug. 30. ASU didn’t record a win over an FBS opponent until the first week of October, a 31-30 triumph versus Texas State in Jonesboro that started a four-game winning streak.
Despite its bleak outlook after playing a difficult nonconference schedule that included losses to Power Four opponents in Arkansas and Iowa State, ASU (7-6) worked its way back into postseason contention by winning five of its final seven games in Sun Belt Conference play.
