Summary
Scalpers list the Xbox ROG Ally X for approximately $2,500, despite $999 preorders still being open.
Scalpers are likely hoping that preorders sell out, reminiscent of the Legion Go 2 preorder chaos.
Preorders are open at MSRP—avoid eBay and don’t fund scalpers’ schemes.
Forgive me for this; I’m not 100% sure how someone goes about scalping products. I know the general gist, but when it comes to the finer ins and outs, I really have no clue. It’s mainly because I have no desire to purchase a product purely to resell it to people in need for an inflated price, so I never really looked into the finer details. Didn’t seem like something I wanted to study up on, you know?
However, based on my limited knowledge, I’m fairly certain you have to wait until the product sells out before you put on your scalping hat. That hasn’t stopped some people from turning to eBay, offering to sell the Xbox ROG Ally for $2,500, despite there still being open preorders for the console. And you know what? I think I prefer to stay ignorant. Learning about the dark arts sounds like a slippery slope.
Scalpers are already asking for $2,500 for the $999 Xbox ROG Ally X
As spotted by Tom’s Hardware, eBay listings have already appeared for the Xbox ROG Ally X, the premium version of the two handhelds Microsoft is releasing in the near future. If you preorder a console from a regular website, it’ll only set you back $999; a big chunk of change less than the $2,500 some scalpers are asking.
If I had to guess, it seems the scalpers are betting on the preorders suddenly drying up. It makes sense; stores can only shift so many units. Additionally, scalpers may have noticed that Lenovo canceled Legion Go 2 preorders because too many people had requested one. I suppose the scalper’s dream scenario is that the same happens with the Xbox ROG Ally X, forcing people who want one on launch day to resort to eBay, where they would have to hand over 2.5 times the asking price to a reseller, essentially engaging in speculative scalping.
