It might be a while before Mass Effect fans have an official new installment to look forward to, but the latest Xbox Partner Preview might have shown off something even better. Along with new looks at games like Stranger Than Heaven and a glimpse at a STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl DLC, the showcase put a spotlight on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.
Based on the popular The Expanse franchise, Osiris Reborn has caught the attention of plenty of Mass Effect fans. As an action RPG with third-person cover shooting and an emphasis on character relationships, it shares a lot of DNA with the iconic sci-fi game series. On X, Mass Effect diehards have been responding optimistically to the new Osiris Reborn trailer from the Xbox Partner Preview.
Mass Effect Fans Are Excited About The Expanse: Osiris Reborn
The Next Best Thing
X user Atharia suggests that The Expanse: Osiris Reborn could be the perfect way to wait for Mass Effect 5, calling it her “new obsession” in the meantime. Baun calls it “the closest thing” to an ideal Mass Effect 5, suggesting that Mass Effect’s spiritual successor Exodus doesn’t look as promising.
Of course, no one is more excited than fans of both Mass Effect and The Expanse. ValyriaN, who cites Mass Effect as their favorite game trilogy and The Expanse as a top-three show, calls it a day-one buy whether “it turns out to be a 7/10 or a 10/10.” StevenSullyShepard echoes a similar sentiment, and the use of Shepard in their username drives the passion home.
This Could Be The Perfect Alternative
Owlcat Has A Proven Track Record
Nothing but Mass Effect is likely to scratch the same itch perfectly, but I’d be surprised if The Expanse: Osiris Reborn doesn’t do a better job of it than Andromeda did. Osiris Reborn comes courtesy of Owlcat Games, a studio that’s already proven its RPG expertise with games like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader.
Of course, that might not translate perfectly to third-person action, but everything looks solid on that front so far. Perhaps most importantly, Owlcat is practiced at delivering memorable, complex companions, which might be the highest priority for plenty of Mass Effect fans.
