Longmont Public Library is calling for extra volunteers ahead of its first LevelUp Longmont Esports event on Sept. 27. The event will be held at Longmont Public Media at 457 Fourth Ave., just a short walking distance from the library and Civic Center, where remote tournament watch parties and other festivities will take place.
The free esports festival will include gaming, three food trucks — Sweet Cow, Amore Pizza and Marco’s Hot Dogs & Tacos — an F1 racing simulator, giveaways, and even games of the non-video variety (think ring toss).
While the initial signup form for volunteers has closed, city staff told the Library Advisory Board during a meeting last week that they are still looking for people to help on the day of the festival in anticipation of large crowds.
The greatest need will be between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., when most of the activities are scheduled, according to Tracey Steele, Administrative Assistant with the City.
Volunteers will primarily help run games on the shared plaza area outside of the Civic Center and library and support the booths at the library entrance. As a perk, they will receive T-shirts and stickers. Coordinators hope extra help will allow the event to run smoothly if there are cancellations.
The esports festival will be hosted by the library in partnership with Longmont Public Media, NextLight, Children, Youth and Families, and the Friends of the Longmont Library.
Attendees can watch the tournament players face off in the video game Brawlhalla. The gamers will compete for custom keyboards from EON Manufacturing, branded jerseys, and meal vouchers. The matches will also be live streamed on YouTube.
Organizers describe the daylong celebration as an effort to promote digital literacy and create a welcoming space for gamers and families alike. Library Director Jon Solomon credited device specialist Donald Prellwitz with shaping the event. “He put together this committee, and they’ve been working extremely hard on this,” Solomon said at the board meeting.
