Your ARM-based Windows 11 device is now an Xbox too, as the Xbox App is now live on all Windows 11 ARM-based devices, Microsoft announced today. It’s Microsoft’s latest push to make every screen, no matter how big or small, an ‘Xbox’ – even if the device can’t actually fulfill the definition of what we’ve known an Xbox to be for the last 20+ years.
Those with an ARM-based device can download the Xbox PC app and play most of their Game Pass library, with Microsoft confirming that “more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog is compatible with these PCs,” and that it is working to add support for more games, so you don’t have an issue playing any of your titles locally.
That said, for what you can’t play locally, Microsoft is quick to add that there’s always the Cloud Gaming option, a choice that is growing in popularity, according to Microsoft, which recently added the service to more regions. A result that’s no doubt helped by the fact that Cloud Gaming is now available at every tier of a Game Pass subscription, instead of being locked behind the most expensive Ultimate subscription, as it was for years.
“Windows and Xbox continue to collaborate across the gaming community, OEMs, silicon innovators and game studios to expand catalog compatibility and deliver a consistently great Windows gaming experience—whether you’re on a powerful desktop, a purpose‑built handheld, or an ARM‑based Windows 11 laptop,” writes the principal program manager for Windows silicon and system integration, Brynnan Fink and senior director of Xbox Next Generation, Nicole Allen, in a blog post.
“Our focus remains on improving compatibility, enhancing performance and delivering experiences that make it easy to jump in and play. We’re grateful to be building this with you. Every update we deliver and every title we bring to ARM-based Windows 11 PCs is shaped by what we hear from players. We’re excited about what’s ahead and look forward to bringing even more improvements, features and games to players everywhere in the coming year.”
