UWEC and CVTC esports leagues face off

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – Students competed today in a first-of-its-kind rivalry game between esport leagues from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Chippewa Valley Technical College.
Esports are a form of competitive gaming where teams usually play against each other in multiplayer video games.
This is the first time the two teams have met in person to compete.
Mikinley Prafke, Assistant Esports Coach for UWEC, said the league has grown a lot in recent years.
UWEC now has over 500 people in their esports club.
“It’s a great place for people who don’t have a place most of the time…to feel like they belong. Esports, it doesn’t matter your gender, or if you have any disabilities…everyone is welcome and that’s really the cool thing about it and why we’ve grown so much,” Prafke said.
Prafke said he hopes the in-person match will help spread the word about esports programs and develop more friendly rivalries with other schools in the Chippewa Valley.
He said UWEC also offers scholarship opportunities for incoming freshman who want to be a part of the university’s esports club.
