HEMLOCK, MI – Hemlock Public School District has launched a high school esports team that will give students the opportunity to compete in organized gaming while developing skills district officials say extend beyond the screen.
The team will compete in nine different esports titles through PlayVS, a national platform that facilitates school-based competitive gaming across the country, according to a news release from the district. Nick Prezzato will serve as head coach.
District leaders framed the program as an investment in student development and future workforce preparation rather than simply recreational gaming.
“Esports gives students a place to belong while building skills that translate directly into the classroom and beyond,” Prezzato said in a statement. “Our goal is to create an environment where students grow as competitors, teammates, and leaders.”
The program aims to help students develop teamwork and communication, strategic thinking and problem-solving, leadership and resilience, time management and accountability, according to district materials. Officials also cited the opportunity for students to explore college and career pathways in STEM and technology fields.
Hemlock Public School District Board of Education President Matt Wesener said the initiative reflects the district’s effort to adapt to student interests while building practical skills.
“This program reflects our belief that schools must evolve alongside the interests and talents of our students,” Wesener said in a statement. “Esports provides another meaningful avenue for students to connect, compete, and develop skills that will serve them long after graduation.”
Denise Dowdell, director of business operations and human resources, connected the program to broader workforce trends.
“At Hemlock, we are intentional about investing in programs that align with workforce trends and future-ready skills,” Dowdell said in a statement. “Esports bridges technology, collaboration, and career exploration in a way that resonates with today’s students.”
The National Federation of State High School Associations has recognized competitive gaming programs, noting that esports provides opportunities for students to build skills in an inclusive environment that strengthens connections to their school community.
