There has been a lot of hay made recently over the relationship between Xbox and storied Japanese video game publisher Square Enix, or rather, lack thereof. The historic role playing (RPG) maven’s support for Xbox has been pretty meager as of late, with seemingly almost every Square Enix title foregoing an Xbox release, with Octopath Traveler II being among the latest example.
During regulatory investigations into Microsoft’s big to acquire Activision it was also revealed in court documents that blockbuster Square Enix titles such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy XVI will not be coming to Xbox at any point thanks to exclusivity deals between Square Enix and Sony.

With that being said, the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV Online coming to Xbox was all the more surprising for gamers and fans over the weekend. If you are unfamiliar, Final Fantasy XIV Online is a massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) with around 27 million active players, and filled with Final Fantasy‘s distinct characters, magic and lore.
No specific release date has been set, though the full Xbox Series X|S release is expected to launch sometime in the spring of 2024. Leading up to that presumed release there will be an open beta as confirmed in the announcement post, as well as an extended free trial coming “very soon indeed!”
