Gamers flooded back to classic Xbox 360-era Call of Duty games after the online servers for Black Ops, Black Ops 2 and Modern Warfare 3 were revived last week.
Though the repairs went unannounced (with matchmaking improvements coming from Microsoft itself and not Activision), the move was met with a lot of fanfare as hundreds of thousands of players revisited these games’ online multiplayer.
(FYI) The Xbox 360 Call of Duty servers are back online and now gamers are flooding back!! Black Ops I – 123, 852 players
Black Ops II – 11,514 players
Modern Warfare 3 – 79,619 players Credit to @Sn4kee for the 📸 pic.twitter.com/qloT8ODrvx — Idle Sloth💙💛 (@IdleSloth84_) July 16, 2023
In fact, these games have shot to the top of Xbox’s top paid games list with 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 currently in the top spot. Even more impressive is the fact that Xbox Series X sales on Amazon have reportedly jumped since the server fix for these old games, with the Series X being reported sold out in stores.

If true, these reports go to show that the importance of the Call of Duty franchise should not be underestimated. It’s no wonder Microsoft is so keen on snagging the series with its pending acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Note: players should be aware that hackers have been widely reported in these titles.
