Marathon Estimated to Have Hit 1.2M Copies Sold Across All Platforms, Mostly on Steam

Following the pre-launch sales estimation from data firm Alinea Analytics, the company has followed up with a post-launch sales estimate for Marathon, the new extraction shooter for Bungie. According to its latest report, after hitting almost 250K copies sold on Steam ahead of launch, nearly three weeks into the game being in players’ hands, it has hit 1.2 million copies sold across all platforms, though most of its sales are said to still be coming from Steam.
According to the report, about 800K of Marathon’s sales are from people playing on PC through Steam, with the drop off to PS5 players being quite significant, as only an estimated 217K players are on PlayStation’s home console. Another 133K copies came from Xbox players.
Bungie’s new hardcore shooter is seemingly struggling to find a larger audience right at launch, but it’s worth noting that the players who did pick it up have stuck with it. While Steam concurrent player numbers only reflect one section of the player base, across all platforms, according to the report, Marathon averages between 300K to 480K daily active users (DAUs).
Its average for this past weekend was 380K DAUs, and it peaked at 478K DAUs during its launch weekend. We know its peak on Steam as far as concurrent users hit 88,337, and that the game fluctuates between 15k and 45k on Steam. But these numbers show that there is, at least so far, a lot of commitment from the PC and console players who are logging in each day to get some more runs in on Tau Ceti IV.
Alinea Analytics also adds that there are clear signs of Bungie fans finding a new home in Marathon. 78.2% of Marathon players also played Destiny 2 previously on Steam, and those numbers are just as high when looking at PlayStation and Xbox players (74.2% and 82.7%, respectively), who have gone from Destiny 2 to Marathon. Also, at least 36.1% of Steam users who played Halo: The Master Chief Collection have played Marathon.
