Project Helix is the official codename for the next Xbox console, according to new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who confirmed the name and some other details about the hardware on March 5. The next-gen Xbox was already confirmed by former Xbox President Sarah Bond as a high-end PC that will play all of your games and offer gamers a premium hardware experience. This followed rumors that it would essentially be a PC that had the capability to play Xbox games.
It’s still unclear what the price of this console will be. Given its capabilities, however, the price is probably not going to be cheap. When you factor in the RAM shortage, which is causing higher component prices for manufacturers, and the fact that Microsoft has already raised the price on the current console more than once, gamers can expect to pay top dollar for the Project Helix hardware.
The Project Helix console will “lead in performance” and play Xbox and PC games
Being able to play Xbox console games and PC games sounds like an exciting prospect if you’re heavily invested in the Xbox ecosystem. While many of the current Xbox games are also released on PC, there are many older games from past Xbox consoles that are not. Project Helix should allow you to play those older titles while also being able to dive into your PC library.
It isn’t mentioned, but since this is essentially just a PC, Project Helix should also be able to play games from whatever PC client you want. This would include Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, and others. Assuming Microsoft develops the console to behave this way.
