Xbox 360’s Date Limit Is December 31 2025, Here’s What’ll Happen To Your Console

If you’re still hanging onto your Xbox 360, you may experience some issues this week as the console’s clock reaches its date limit. First released in 2005, the Xbox 360 housed countless all-time classics, but like every console, it was designed with a limited shelf life.
When you set the date and time manually, the Xbox 360’s internal clock only goes as far as December 31, 2025 — i.e., today. You literally can’t scroll down any further. Players have repeatedly raised concerns about this impending deadline, but as it turns out, the answer was right in front of us this whole time.
What Happens After Midnight
Way back in January, YouTuber GeneralKidd posted a video displaying what will happen when the Xbox 360 hits its date limit (spotted by Pure Xbox). The video shows an Xbox 360 whose clock has been manually set to December 31, 2025, at 11:58 PM. GeneralKidd kills some time, and the console then automatically rolls over to January 1, 2026.
So, as long as you have the correct date and time set before midnight tonight, your Xbox should continue to display the correct date and time well into 2026 and beyond.
Also, if your Xbox has access to an internet connection, don’t worry; it should be able to sync the date and time automatically, so you likely won’t encounter many issues in that regard.
So What Happens To Your Console?
Most Functions Should Be Uninterrupted
Thankfully, the Xbox 360 reaching its date limit won’t cause immediate issues for most players. In the video above, GeneralKidd demonstrates that games are still playable, engaging in a little round of Halo 3 ODST.
So it seems you’ll likely still have access to your entire Xbox 360 library after the time change; your console won’t shut down forever, or explode, or turn into a pumpkin.
However, unless Microsoft pushes out an update for the 20-year-old console soon, you likely won’t be able to manually set the date and time of your Xbox 360 after the December 31 deadline.
That’s not an issue if your 360 is already set to the correct time. Nor will it become a problem as long as your console is connected to the internet, as it’ll automatically sync with the accurate date and time, no input required.
However, if your Xbox 360 isn’t online or set by midnight tonight, you may never be able to set it to the correct time again, unless you connect it to the internet. Again, that shouldn’t pose any major problems for most use cases. Unless you’re using your 360 to keep time, you should be able to play as normal.
