Xbox Game Pass has a host of incredible games, but for obvious reasons, one thing it doesn’t have is Zelda, arguably one of the most iconic franchises in gaming. If you’re looking for an Xbox alternative to open-world Zelda games like Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, however, Game Pass has an unexpected sci-fi RPG that’s the next-best thing.
Revenge of the Savage Planet is a highly underrated sci-fi RPG available on Xbox Game Pass that definitely scratches the same itch as many of the iconic open-world Zelda games thanks to its blend of environmental puzzles, quirky creatures, and a massive toolkit of items with varying uses.

Savage Planet Is One Of Xbox Game Pass’s Most Underrated RPGs
Revenge of the Savage Planet is Racoon Logic’s 2025 sequel to Typhoon Studios’ original Journey to the Savage Planet, and it launched as a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass earlier this year. It shares many overlapping beloved qualities with games like BOTW in that it has an exploration-first design, quirky puzzles built into a vast open world, and a huge array of exploration tools that feel very Zelda-esque.
Revenge of the Savage Planet is a massive step up in quality and scale from Journey to the Savage Planet, taking many of the features that made the original great and improving/expanding on them. The game features light RPG elements without a huge emphasis on stat investment and more of a focus on equipment and an expanding toolset.
The game also features a vast world with vibrant colors and diverse creatures, and while the tone is quite different from Zelda games like Tears of the Kingdom, it has a very familiar Zelda-like gameplay loop. The Savage Planet games are quite whimsical and funny, with more of a humorous tone than anything you’d get in Zelda, not to mention the obvious sci-fi themes, but overall it certainly scratches that Zelda itch if you’re into that sort of thing on Xbox Game Pass.

I’d highly recommend picking this game up even if you never played the original, as it basically has all the things that made Journey to the Savage Planet great and then some.
