Microsoft’s answers to the Nintendo Switch 2 are almost here.
The tech company is dropping two new gaming handhelds — the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X — on Thursday, Oct. 16, but Amazon, Walmart and the ASUS website have them available to preorder now.
You don’t have to wait to get your hands on the PC handhelds that travel with you anywhere.
Microsoft says gamers will enjoy a console-like experience built into the gadgets powered by Windows 11.
The model you go with depends on the power and storage you need:
ASUS ROG Xbox Ally ($600): features an AMD Ryzen Z2 A Processor, 16GB of memory and 512GB of internal storage
ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X ($1,000): features an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor, 24GB for memory and 1TB of storage
With these systems, you’ll get right to all your stored games from start-up, with an interface that drops you into the action, similar to a traditional console. Best of all, when you download them, you can play them remotely, no matter where you are.
Log in to your Xbox Game Pass Ultimate account to stream more PC titles on Xbox Game Cloud, many of which you can play from launch day. You can also log into other game stores on the device to access your full collection.
When you’re ready to play another game, reconfigure the settings, check performance state, chat with friends or capture game footage, you can hit the new Xbox game button to launch the Game Bar.
What to expect: Tech and design upgrades
The ROG Ally’s design scored the biggest upgrade from previous models. They feature textured grips that mimic the feel of a traditional Xbox controller for a more natural and comfortable hold.
The enhanced 7-inch FHD 1080P IPS touchscreen comes with “a bright 500 nit backlight, a 120Hz refresh rate and a FreeSync Premium variable refresh rate for smoother, tear-free visuals,” according to Microsoft.
For a more immersive experience, you can opt for the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, which features customizable haptic motors with dedicated impulse triggers to vibrate precisely with in-game actions.
But it’s not all play on the new ASUS ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. You can get to work, handle a quick task or stream your favorite TV shows by easily switching between your games and the Windows Desktop.
